A Hyde School Parent Reflection on Family Growth

This story comes from a Hyde School parent whose family was transformed through Hyde’s Family Learning Center, Discovery Groups, and the powerful ‘Hyde moments’ that shaped their journey.

The Delaney Family — Hyde School parents whose journey through FLC weekends, Discovery Groups, and ‘Hyde moments’ transformed their son and reshaped their family.

I don’t think a day goes by when I don’t apply something I learned from my family’s time at Hyde School. My son, who struggled in traditional schools, graduated from the Woodstock Campus in 2010. His Hyde experience not only helped us get our son back to the boy we knew he could be—it had a similar effect on my husband, myself, and our extended family.

I can’t stress enough how important the Family Learning Centers (FLCs) and the family learning weekends were to the process. Showing up and participating, allowing our kids to see that we, too, could be vulnerable and learn something new—while correcting behaviors that were not serving us—was key to what we now always refer to as our “Hyde moments.”

Sharing our struggles with other families who were also trying to be the best parents they could be was incredibly helpful. During those weekends and regional meetings, we worked as teams, supporting each other in moving away from habits that didn’t work and practicing techniques that improved our communication and reduced stress. Our kids watched us take emotional risks, do the deep dive, and bare our issues—no matter how uncomfortable it was.

The remarkable thing is that our kids led the way through their experience in Discovery Groups. They taught us how to come clean, how to listen, and how to communicate our feelings honestly and safely. Hyde gave us the words to express ourselves clearly. And as Joey Gauld taught us: “The truth will set you free—but first it will hurt like hell.”

We all grew up during our time at Hyde. We left as better people, better parents, and a stronger couple—and the lessons have stayed with us to this day.

What distinguishes Hyde School from other schools is the parenting component. Hyde emphasizes the essential role parents play and gives us the tools to become our children’s best teachers—while also helping us become our best selves.

P.S. My husband and I even brought what we learned to our business “family,” and saw improvement there as well.

Forever grateful,

Jamie Delaney, Parent ’10
