As a 1974 Black graduate of Hyde School, the most important life lesson I learned was that I mattered and that my voice was just as important and valued as anyone else’s. I was not always treated with this same human regard when I was outside of those gates. Those lessons enabled me to take risks and speak up in uncomfortable and challenging situations. I became an educator and achieved many “firsts” in my career with my culminating achievement being the first Black Head of a Middle School in a 100 year+ predominantly white private school in Baltimore, Maryland.
